We all found ourselves in the awkward situation of not having a microphone handy. Fortunately, you can always improvise if you have a smartphone and know what tools to use. If it's an impromptu microphone you're looking for, you should get WO Mic, which lets you turn your phone into a microphone at a moment's notice. The setup is quite easy, so you don't have to keep your friends waiting for too long.

The software is free, but you have to pay for it to unlock certain features. It works on all modern Windows systems, and it supports both 32 and 64-bit versions. Besides installing the desktop application, which takes only a few seconds, you also need to install the app with the same name on your smartphone.

Once you have the desktop application and the mobile app up and running, connecting the two will only take a few seconds. There are several ways of linking your phone to your computer. You can do it through a direct USB cable connection, through Bluetooth or via Wi-Fi. If you opt for Bluetooth, the desktop application will detect your phone automatically, and you can select it in a drop-down menu. The USB method is the most straightforward since you only need to connect your phone with a cable.

If you have a wireless network, connecting your phone over Wi-Fi is probably the most convenient method. All you have to do is type the IP address that shows up on the mobile app and click a button on the desktop application's connection menu. Just remember to allow the mobile app to access your phone's microphone.

With the connection established, you can simply speak into your phone and the audio signal will go over to your computer. You will be able to voice chat with your friends, record yourself and do anything else you would do with a microphone. You can also make the software play the microphone sounds in your computer's speakers if you want to check the audio quality.

If you don't have a microphone close by, WO Mic will save you from stepping out and trying to find one in the middle of the night.

Pros

You can use your smartphone as a microphone. Connecting the phone to your computer is a straightforward process. There are several connection methods to choose from.

Cons

The free version doesn't let you change the microphone volume.
